HOW TO MAKE BONE BROTH
Making bone broth at home is extremely simple and a great way to get a rich source of nourishment.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

-
2 lbs of pastured or grass-fed bones
-
You can use leftover bones from roasted chicken or other meats.
-
-
2 chicken feet (optional) but adds more benefits - Makes it much richer in collagen.
-
1 gal water
-
2 TBSP apple cider vinegar - The vinegar helps to draw the collagen and other benefits out of the bones.
-
Salt and pepper to taste if desired.

BONE BROTH COOKING DIRECTIONS
-
If you are using raw bones, especially beef bones, it improves flavor to roast them in the oven first.
-
Place them in a roasting pan and roast for 30 minutes at 350°F.
-
Place the bones in a large stockpot or the Instant Pot.
-
Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cover.
-
Cook for at least 10-12 hours, or until reduced by 1/3 or 1/2, leaving you with 6-8 cups of bone broth. The more it reduces, the more intense the flavor and the greater the number of nutritional benefits it will have. Twelve hours is the ideal amount of time unless you are using a pressure cooker, in which case the time will be much less.
-
Strain and use or store. You can freeze large batches of bone broth in individual servings or ice cubes to drink on a cold day or use them as a base to make quick and easy soups.
HOW TO BUY GOOD BONE BROTH
Not everyone feels like making their own broth.

There are a number of great pre-made bone broths on the market.

Unfortunately, a large number of them oare just regular broths that have been relabeled, not true bone broth and it can be nearly impossible to know which is which from the label.

Bone broth needs to simmer and cook for many hours with lots of bones, something most companies don't want to do because it is much more expensive than making broth. It's easier and more profitable for them to sell regular broth labeled as bone broth.

Here is one of our real bone broth favorites, you can also see more of our recommended brands in our shopping guide.
BONE BROTH COLLAGEN POWDER
Bone broth powders have become very popular, offering the benefits of bone broth in a convenient powder form.

Unfortunately, like much in the supplement industry, things are often not what they seem.
Many bone broth powders are not real bone broth, or made with ethically questionable materials and unwanted additives.
FAKE BONE BROTH POWDERS
Many "bone broth" powders are simply refined collagen powders relabeled as bone broth.

Others are a blend of amino acids, with flavorings and other additives to make it appear and taste as bone broth does.

Others may start as bone broth, but are so heavily processed and high temperature dried, that in the end they resemble nothing like real bone broth.
REAL BONE BROTH POWDER
Real bone broth powder should be made in the same way you make yours at home.

Grass-Fed bones, slow cooked with apple cider vinegar and water.

After that, the broth is allowed to cool and is then freeze dried and milled into a powder.

That's it, simple as it should be.

Freeze drying avoids the use of heat and better preserves the nutritional value than other forms of drying.
ADDITVE FREE BONE BROTH POWDER
Many companies add thickeners, flavorings, and sweeteners to cover up the fact that their "bone broth" powders may not really be what they claim them to be or they use poor quality ingredients and processing methods with can create off flavors.

Avoid products with these ingredients.

Real bone broth products should only contain bones, vinegar, and salt.

It should be free of additives, flavorings, and sweeteners that companies use to cover up the off tastes that can come from excess processing or poor quality ingredients.

Bone broth powder should have a mild taste.
INSTANTIZED BONE BROTH POWDER
Good bone broth powder will only dissolve in hot water.

Many companies instantize their powders to make them dissolve in cold water.

The instantizing process is very harsh and will cause a loss of a lot of the nutritional value of the bone broth.

Others are selling refined collagen and claiming it to be bone broth powder when it is not.

Real bone broth powder will not dissolve in cold water. It becomes a lumpy mess.
GRASS-FED AND PASTURE RAISED
Real bone broth powder should be made from cows and other animals that are grass-fed or pasture raised fowl.

Preferably they would come from animals raised using regenerative agriculture.

The company should have a direct relationship with the farms, not buy bulk powder from middleman or just know the country of origin. Country of origin is not enough as there can be good and bad farms in every country.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of companies do not make their own bone broth powder, so they know very little about where it comes from.
WHOLE FOOD BONE BROTH PROTEIN
It took awhile, but we managed to find a true bone broth powder.

This incredible broth is made from grass-fed Lake Eyre Australian cows, and contains no flavorings, thickeners, or sweeteners. It has not been instantized or heavily processed.

NXGEN Wholefoods is one of a very small number of companies that produce their own bone broth powder and have a direct relationship with the farms they get the bones from.

It is slow cooked for forty-eight hours and gently freeze dried for maximum nutritional value.

Each serving contains 11 grams of collagen!

Due to the moisture sensitivity of this powder always use a dry spoon when removing from the airtight container.
For a quick cup of organic broth stir 1 teaspoon of grass fed bone broth powder into 1 cup of boiling water, adding a few chopped herbs or grated ginger if desired.
To make a bowl of soup allow 3 teaspoons of powder to 300ml of water per person. Create nourishing broth bowls by adding your choice of chopped vegetables, fresh herbs, and protein choice.
The right broth can nourish and support your health. The wrong kind will just leave you disappointed.
