About Marshmallow Elixir: This beautiful mallow has soft, fuzzy leaves with tiny white and light-purple flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees. We dig the white root either early in spring, or later in fall (once the ripened seeds are collected and scattered), from plants that are 3-4 years old. It's possible to feel the moistening quality of the roots by the way one's fingers glide and slip along the roots. This mucilage comes from the polysaccharides that soothe and lubricate the mucosa of the body with a special affinity for the gastrointestinal/digestive tract, respiratory system, and urinary tract. Our Marshmallow Elixir is sweet-tasting and most helpful for bringing soothing and moisture to occasionally irritated mucosal tissues caused by circumstances such as dryness or heat. Marshmallow root is also rich in prebiotic starches, which help to maintain a healthy microbiome. A healthy microbiome helps to support the assimilation of nutrients, mood, the immune system, healthy hormone balance, and general vitality. Great for kids and adults alike.
Garden Notes: Many six-foot-tall Marshmallow plants live in select places throughout our gardens. Their tiny, mallow-like flowers attract ruby-throated hummingbirds and nibbling herbalists. We hand-dig Marshmallow's demulcent roots in spring and autumn, and immediately hand-chop and tincture them in a solution of organic glycerin and organic alcohol. The glycerin is what draws out the mucilaginous qualities of the roots. A small amount of organic alcohol is added as a natural preservative.
