MACA QUALITY CONTROL AND SAFETY TESTING MACA QUALITY CONTROL AND TESTING Proper Quality Control Is Essential Ensuring your maca is free from high levels of heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, as well as free from adulteration, is essential to ensuring your health is not compromised. MACA QUALITY CONTROL There are a lot of issues with contamination and adulteration of maca products. Learning what they are and how to avoid them is essential in choosing a good maca product. MACA ADULTERATION WITH SUGAR Caramelized sugar is often added to poor-quality maca powders to make the powder taste similar to the malted caramel taste that good maca powder has. There is an at-home test that you can do to see if your maca has been adulterated with caramelized sugar (it will not catch 100% of sugar adulteration, but it will catch it in many cases.) If when you mix your maca in water, it turns a dark brown color, this is indicative of sugar adulteration. This does not apply to atomized maca. It works with raw and gelatinized maca. While not all starch adulteration can be detected at home, there are a few things you can do to check and see if your maca powder is cut with starch. The first is foaming. If you stir up your maca and it gets a lot of foam on the top, it is most likely diluted with starch. The second is sedimentation. Maca powder should mix fairly uniformly in water, with only a small amount of sedimentation. If, after a minute or two, your maca begins to separate a lot and get lots of sediment on the bottom of the glass, then it is most likely diluted with starch. One of the most important families of compounds is macamides. Guaranteed levels of macamides are one of the most important measures for determining the quality of a maca product. In order for it to be considered therapeutic, it should be at least .6% macamides. Unfortunately, most maca products do not state the levels of macamides in their products. Look for products that list minimum amounts of these awesome compounds right on the label. Nose To Tail Center Manufacturing MANUFACTURING How are beef organ supplements made? Making sure your organ supplement is manufactured properly is an important step in ensuring you get the most benefits. PROPER CARE How your organ supplement is manufactured makes a huge difference in the final product. Too much heat or heavy processing can cause damage to many of the important fragile compounds found in these awesome foods. DRYING How your organ supplement is dried has a huge impact on the final product. Harsh, excessive, high-temperature drying will lead to the degradation and destruction of fragile compounds. It will also lead to a loss of nutrients. These types of drying methods are much faster and cheaper, so many companies use them to save money, because it is easy to hide on the label. In addition many drying methods may have the same name, but there can be huge variables in how they are done and the temperatures used, which can affect the final product, without being shown on the label. DRYING Freeze-drying, also known as lyophilization is a great method for most organ supplements. It will not work for all organs though. Freeze drying is a low-temperature process that freezes the food, lowers the pressure, and then removes the moisture through sublimation. This is a relatively simple process that leaves nearly all of the nutritional value intact and protects the fragile compounds. DRYING DRYING Proper vacuum-drying is done for raw materials that are hygroscopic and heat sensitive. The vacuum created in the chamber allows the material to dry faster and at lower temperatures than spray-drying. It is also much lower pressure than other forms of drying, which helps to protect fragile compounds. DRYING Most of our organ supplements are freeze-dried. The following have different drying methods because they require a more specialized process: Bone Marrow - Vacuum-Dried Whole Bone Matrix - Vacuum Dried Some Collagens - Vacuum Dried There are other drying methods that can be used, some better than others including spray-drying, vacuum drying, drum drying. Spray-drying and drum-drying tend to be the highest temperature and the most intense, so we generally recommend avoiding organ supplements made with those. DEFATTED Many organ supplements are defatted. This process makes it easier for supplement companies to manufacture and increases the shelf life, but it removes a lot of beneficial nutrition. The process can also be very harsh which can damage fragile compounds. Avoid defatted organ supplements. PROCESSING Most of our glandular supplements are produced very simply. The materials are washed, freeze-dried, milled, and encapsulated. Very simple and easy. Nothing taken away, while the fragile compounds and nutrients are preserved. Some materials such as bone marrow, collagens, and whole bone matrix require a few extra steps. PROCESSING Bone marrow requires a bit of extra work in order to turn it into a supplement. Manufacturing bone marrow matrix is carried out by soaking the leg bones (femur bones rich in marrow) in a mild salty, acidic water to optimise the extraction process, to release the rich bone marrow along with the amino acids as well as glycosaminoglycans from the bone. Australian Murray River salt and apple cider vinegar is used to maintain optimum pH and conditions to extract all the nutritional elements from the bone. The solid bone is then removed by straining and the remaining liquor is vacuum dried to remove water and retain the marrow matrix heat sensitive vitamins, minerals and peptides. Following the drying process the bone marrow matrix extract is milled into a powder which contains marrow as well as other minerals and natural salts from the bone, including peptides, collagen and glycosaminoglycans. Unfortunately, too many companies use harsh methods instead of these gentle ones because they are faster and cheaper. Make sure you know how your bone marrow supplement is made. PROCESSING Whole bone matrix, natures best source of calcium, also requires a bit of extra work in order to turn it into a supplement. NXGEN Whole Bone Matrix is made using leg bones from 100% Australian Lake Eyre Beef Bones. Selected Grass Fed Bones are ground into bone chips approximately 10 mm in size. Following this the bone chips are cleaned at a low temperature with an enzyme in water to remove any non-bone tissue and marrow fat. The cleaned bone chips are then vacuum dried over a 24 hour period to remove moisture and retain heat sensitive nutrients. Finally, the dried bone is milled into a fine powder for encapsulation. Unfortunately, too many companies use harsh methods instead of these gentle ones because they are faster and cheaper. Make sure you know how your whole bone calcium is made. PROCESSING Whole food collagen requires a bit of extra work to turn them into a supplement. At low temperature, the materials such as trachea, scapula, and other collagen rich parts, are cleaned with enzymes, such as bromelain and proteases, in water, to remove the parts that are not needed and allow a higher level of beneficial compounds in the final product. Then the product is dried at low temperatures to remove moisture and preserve the heat sensitive, fragile compounds and nutrients. Then it is milled into a fine powder for encapsulation. Unfortunately, too many companies use harsh methods instead of these gentle ones because they are faster and cheaper. Make sure you know how your whole food collagen is made . MILLING Milling is the process of turning the raw materials into a smaller size so that they can properly manufactured and encapsulated. It is important that a company has the right milling machines for the right raw materials, because different materials may need different milling techniques. Using the wrong one can cause damage to the fragile compounds in these foods. ENCAPSULATION After being processed, dried, and milled the products should be into capsules and bottled. Gelatin capsules are better at protecting many of the fragile capsules found in organs than vegetable capsules. Plus, you get some extra gelatin, which has its own health benefits. Encapsulating organs is a slow and delicate process when done right. In order to speed this up, many companies will use a lot of processing aids and flow agents, to reduce their costs. Look for organ supplements without added fillers, flow agents, binders, and excipients. MANUFACTURING Most organ supplement companies do not manufacture their own products. Look for companies that have a direct relationship with their farmers, meaning they get the organ meats directly from their farm, not sent to one facility for drying, then another for manufacturing, etc. Look for companies who actually manufacture the product from getting the raw material in, to drying and milling, to encapsulating. This allows them to get a much fresher product and have complete control over the quality. FINAL PRODUCT Knowing how your product is processed from start to finish is very important if you want to get a great product. Buzzwords and marketing terms like raw, unprocessed, cold processed, etc, have no actual meaning and can be used on anything. Learn why so many cacao products contain high levels of cadmium and lead and how to avoid them. Contamination can come from the soil and manufacturing process. HEAVY METALS IN CACAO HEAVY METALS AND CACAO One of the biggest problems with cacao is the high levels of heavy contamination, such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium. This comes about for a number of reasons. CACAO AND HEAVY METALS - SOIL Much of the areas where cacao is grown are located in areas where the soil is high in heavy metals. This occurs because of the use of leaded gasoline and some areas have soil that is rich with nutrients from volcanic eruptions. These eruptions often deposit large amounts of heavy metals. CACAO AND HEAVY METALS - OLD EQUIPMENT Many plants where cacao is processed are very old and have equipment that is not properly maintained. This equipment is often made with parts that are partly composed of lead and arsenic. This leads to heavy metals getting in the cacao during the manufacturing process. CADIUM AND CACAO POWDER Cacao powder, in particular, tends to be high in cadmium. Removing the fat, to make cacao butter and create the powder, means there will be higher levels of cadmium, as a percetnage of the final product than in a cacao paste, bean or nib. It's extra important when choosing cacao powder to choose one that is carefully produced and tested. FINDING CACAO WITHOUT HIGH LEVELS OF HEAVY METALS The best way to ensure you are getting cacao without high levels of heavy metals is to only buy products that have each batch third-party tested to ensure low levels of heavy metals. Many companies will give test results based on very small amounts, so the levels seem low, but when taking a full serving, you will often get far higher levels than they claim. Look for test results that show levels in full serving size or more so you can see what the true levels are. All cacao products will have some heavy metals, and the key is to find products with the lowest levels possible. ETHICAL CACAO ETHICAL ISSUES WITH CACAO AND CHOCOLATE The growing of cacao contains major ethical issues from an environmental and human standpoint. DEFORESTATION AND CACAO Often when growing cacao, farmers clear tropical forests in order to plant new trees, rather than using the same land. Much of this deforestation is illegally done as well. Hundreds of thousands of acres of forest are lost every year to this. Make sure to only buy shade-grown cacao . PESTICIDES AND CACAO A lot of cacao is grown using harsh organochlorine pesticides such as DDT. These pesticides persist in the environment for a very long time. In addition, workers on many of the cacao farms are not given adequate protection from them and are often exposed to very high levels. Make sure your cacao is produced without them. Keep in mind that just because something is organic, does not mean it was produced without pesticides or that the workers were given proper protection. CHILD SLAVERY AND CACAO One of the worst issues surrounding cacao is the use of child slavery. In the most recent report, it was found that over two million children were engaged in dangerous cacao growing, many of them slaves. This is a tragedy and causes an amount of suffering that many of us cannot even being to fathom. Despite promises to stop these practices, companies like Hershey, Nestle (competing for the world's worst company award), and Mars continue to purchase cacao products made with child slavery. Those companies could choose to end the practice, but they choose to put profits over people. That is why you should boycott those companies and encourage stores to stop selling their products. POVERTY AND CACAO Most cacao farmers are paid less than what it costs to grow it. This is causing a cycle of poverty that many cannot escape from. Despite the rising profits of chocolate companies many farmers live on less than $1.25 a day which is below the level of absolute poverty in those countries. So while companies like Nestle get rich, the people suffer. RESPONSIBLE CACAO You can help change this though. Commit to only buying chocolate and cacao products that are truly fair-trade and that help to improve the communities where they are sourced from.
