- Immunoglobulins - Colostrum, IGY, And IGG | Rooted Nutrition
Immunoglobulins are integral to good gut health. From colostrum and IGG to IGYs and SBIs, these whole-food supplements have big benefits when taken every day. GUT HEALTH CENTER IMMUNOGLOBULINS IMMUNOGLOBULINS - IGG, IGY, COLOSTRUM The gut garden pollinators and earthworms They may be small in size, but these proteins play a huge role in the health of your gut and your body. WHAT IS AN IMMUNOGLOBULIN? A class of proteins present in the serum and cells of the immune system, which function as antibodies. WHAT ARE IGG, IGA, AND IGM? Immunoglobulin G is the most common antibody in the body. It helps to protect your body against infection by "remembering" which pathogens your body has been exposed to before so that if they come back your immune system will remember to attack them. Immunoglobulin A plays a crucial role in the immune function of mucus membranes. Immuneglobulin M is largest antibody and the first to show up in response to an antigen. It is your first line of defense and helps to modulate immune function. WHAT IS AN IGY? Immmunoglobulin Y is the major antibody found in birds, egg, reptiles, and lungfish. It functions in a similar way to Immunoglobulin G in mammals. BOVINE SERUM IGG Bovine serum IGG's are produced from bovine serum. They contain a range of immunoglobulins including IGG, IGA, and IGM. It has been extensively researched for its role in healthy gut functions including gut lining, immune function, healthy bacterial balance, and normal bowel movements. COLOSTRUM Colostrum is derived from the first milkings of a cow after giving birth. It particularly rich in IGA, as well as having IGG and IGM. It is especially beneficial in supporting healthy gut lining function as well as a healthy bacterial balance. IMMUNOGLOBULIN Y IGY's are derived from specially immunized chicken eggs. These eggs produce antibodies to various pathogenic bacteria. These IGY's help to support healthy immune function, cytokine balance, gut lining, bacterial balance, normal bowel movements, and much, much more! IGY VS IGG There are a couple differences between using IGG and IGY. The first is the IGY powders tend to contain a higher concentration of immunoglobulins per gram than IGG powders. The second and most important is that unlike IGG, IGY does not have the ability to bind to FC receptors. This makes it much safer to use than IGG, because it does not have the same risks of inciting an overreaction of the immune system. WHAT DO THEY DO? Immunoglobulins help the body in a number of ways including a healthy cytokine balance, bacterial balance, gut lining, immune function, and much more! HEALTHY CYTOKINE BALANCE Cytokines are proteins that have a large number of effects in the body. Sometimes the body gets a little too excited and releases too many cytokines. This can lead to a number of health issues. Certain immunoglobulins, like IGY, help to support healthy levels of these cytokines, because you can have too much of a good thing. HEALTHY BACTERIAL BALANCE Keeping a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria is the next step to a healthy gut. Think of this as weeding the garden. If you get too many weeds than the garden will not grow properly. Immunoglobulins help to inhibit the adhesion of bad bacteria without harming the good bacteria. These bad bacteria are then flushed out without the die off effect caused by a lot of supplements. This allows your good bacteria to thrive. Immunoglobulins are best way to ensure that you have a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria in our gut! HEALTHY GUT LINING The health of the gut begins with the lining. When the lining becomes unhealthy, bad things can happen. The lining is held together by tight junctions. When these junctions start to come apart, it is often called "leaky gut". This is actually a bad name for it, because it is a symptom not an actual disease. We prefer the term "tight-junction dysfunction". Zonulin is a protein that modulates the permeability of these tight junctions. Immunoglobulins help to support healthy zonulin levels which in turn help to support a healthy gut lining. HEALTHY IMMUNE FUNCTION Immunoglobulins support healthy immune function through a variety of mechanisms. Since they have an impact on a number of immune related functions, they provide a much bigger benefit than traditional immune supporting supplements which may only support one part of the immune system. COLOSTRUM SUPPLEMENTS There are a number of important factors when choosing a colostrum supplement. The first is ethical. The cows should grass-fed and prefferebly on a regenerative agriculture based farm. Since it derived from the first milking of a cow after giving birth, it is important that plenty of it is reserved for the calf. This is one of many reseaons why it is essential to be able to trace the product back to the farm it came from. Without knowing the farm, you cannot know whether the cows are being treated properly. The second is the collection and drying methods. The array of beneficial compounds in colostrum such as immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, enzymes and much more, are very fragile. The colostrum should be processed in the following manner: It is collected in sterilised stainless steel tanks, stored below the glass temperature to stop spoilage, then flash-pasteurised at 72°C for 15 seconds, long enough to kill any pathogenic microbes but not long enough to damage the delicate bioactive elements of colostrum. The pasteurised colostrum is then freeze dried to maintain the bioactivity and nutritional value of the original colostrum. Avoid colostrum products with flavorings and sweeteners added. You can see our choice for ethically sourced and properly made colostrum here . BOVINE SERUM IMMUNOGLOBULIN (SBI) SUPPLEMENTS SBI's (serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolates) are produced from bovine plasma, in the United States and New Zealand. The process of production is tightly controlled to ensure that the fragile compounds are intact. It contains over 180 unique proteins and many of the same immunoglobulins and growth factors found in colostrum. They are tested to be free of BSE (the prion that causes mad cow disease). When choosing an SBI supplement look for this symbol on the label: Avoid SBI products with flavorings or sweeteners added. You can see our choice for SBI here. IGY SUPPLEMENTS IGY's are produced by innoculating chickens, causing them to produce various antibodies that they then pass along to the eggs. These eggs are then collected, and then low temperature dried. A true whole food product. From an ethical standpoint, it is important that the chickens are well taken care of and allowed to truly be free range and enjoy the outdoors. Healthy, happy, chickens will produce higher levels of immunoglobulins, so by taking care of them, they care of us. Avoid IGY products with flavorings and sweeteners added. You can see our choice for IGY products here. HOW TO TAKE? Immunoglobulins should be taken daily. Their effects build over time. The longer you take them the better the effects. They can be taken with any cold food or beverages. Avoid taking them with hot food and beverages, as the heat will degrade them. HAPPY GUT EQUATION Getting the happy gut equation right will help you to live a happier, healthier life. IGY's + prebiotics + probiotics + healthy diet + stress relief = A happy gut! Great prebiotic foods include citrus fruits, berries, garlic, onions, root vegetables, and raw cacao, Great probiotic foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi. Immunoglobulins are a key part of the happy gut equation. Just as pollinators and earthworms are important for a healthy garden, immunoglobulins are important for your gut garden. These small proteins pack a big punch and provide benefits that cannot be matched by probiotics and prebiotics. - All About Farm-To-Table Ceremonial Cacao | Rooted Nutrition
Ethically produced farm-to-table ceremonial cacao is the ultimate cacao experience. Learn all about recipes, cacao ceremonies, sourcing and preparation, CEREMONIAL CACAO CACAO CEREMONIES CEREMONIAL CACAO PASTE Ceremonial cacao represents the full expression of this incredible plant. Cacao ceremonies are a way to bring us closer to nature and to resonate gratitude and thanks for everything mother earth (Pachamama) provides. Ceremonial cacao unlocks the true healing potential that cacao has to offer. WHAT IS CEREMONIAL CACAO? It is pure full-fat cacao bean paste. The cacao paste block (or drops) must be prepared from only 100% pure organic cacao beans that have been naturally sun-dried, hand-peeled and milled to form the paste. Nothing added, nothing removed. It is cacao is it’s purest form beautifully blended in its own full-fat to produce a creamy 100% pure block. CRIOLLO CACAO It is made from premium hand-selected single-origin Criollo cacao beans. - Criollo cacao is the most rare and premium cacao famous for its incredibly aromatic flavor and aroma as well as containing the highest levels of therapeutic components. It is however very delicate, low yielding and requires careful attention and support from the jungle canopy to thrive. This variety is not used for mass production as it cannot be produced on a large scale. For authentic ceremonial cacao the pods are individually hand-picked with permission from the tree, inspected for imperfections and beans are graded to select only the finest. On the other hand, most commercially produced cacao is made from different varieties of cacao that are more resistant, higher yielding but not as aromatic and therapeutic, with lower levels of bio-active compounds. TRADITIONAL CACAO FARMING Most cacao is now produced from mono-cropped trees at the expense of the jungle by farmers who burn out areas to mass cultivate for bigger yields. Often using immature or damaged pods, weak or wounded cacao, and pooling all beans from different sources together into a blend. To hide imperfections in flavor these beans are often roasted to create a more chocolate flavor. CANOPY CACAO FARMING Our Ceremonial cacao 100% organic shade-grown under a natural agroforestry canopy. Cacao pods are porous and they absorb the aromas and energies of the plants that surround them. Neighboring trees containing fruits like banana or papaya have the ability to infuse the flavor of the cacao and enhance the profile and sensory experience when using it in ceremony. True ceremonial cacao comes from this agroforestry environment and the cacao produced not only contains the flavors of the jungle that surround it but also the energy and vibration of the environment, further enhancing the spiritual connection of the user to the Amazonian spirit. CACAO BLESSING It is blessed by the indigenous owners of the land and produced with respect to their traditional customs. All cacao comes from indigenous communities where the people have used it ceremonially for thousands of years as a sacred plant medicine. It is essential that the ancestral owners of the cacao are involved in the production process including blessing the soil, trees, pods and paste throughout the process and that reverence is upheld towards the culturally sensitive aspects of the people from the farming community. We are honored to be given access to their sacred plant medicines and require their blessings in order for us to use it energetically clean. The cacao ceremony starts when the seeds are planted. Happy trees, happy farmers and a happy community provides clean pure happy, high vibrational cacao. Ensuring we are culturally sensitive with the way the cacao is produced and exported is essential and one big differences between ceremonial grade cacao and simple cacao paste. The intentions of the producer will determine the energetics of the final product. CEREMONIAL CACAO HEALTH BENEFITS It is packed with health enhancing bio actives to awaken your heart chakra and heal your body. Biochemical analysis of our ceremonial cacao paste showed significantly higher levels of several key therapeutic components compared to normal cacao paste or other cacao based products and powders. The reality is that ceremonial grade cacao is far more powerful due to all the reasons listed on this page. The result is more bliss, more energy, more happiness, more joy, more satisfaction, more awakening and more uplifting occurs when you take ceremonial cacao vs other cacao products. It is pure and transformative, very different from just cacao powder or supermarket chocolate. AMARU CACAO - UKHU PACHA- THE SPIRAL This high-vibrational Ceremonial Criollo Cacao has been produced with love and pure intention in honor of the Awajun tribe in Peru who have used cacao in ceremony for over 5000 years. Their ceremonial cacao temple at Monte Grande (Peru) was constructed in the shape of a spiral to represent union of the human spirit with the universe, connection to our ancestors of the past and projection forwards to our future descendants. It is thought to symbolize also the Ukhu Pacha (underworld) in Andean and Amazonian cosmovision represented by the snake (spiral shape). For them cacao allows connection to the divinity and a way to resonate gratitude and thanks for everything mother earth (Pachamama) provides. Each block comes blessed direct from the farm and directly supports the farmers and community who produce it in Tocache, Peru. AMARU CACAO PROFILE This cacao has been biochemically analysed and shown to be potent in levels of theobromine, NAEAS, polyphenols and tryptophan - providing sensations of uplifting bliss, mental clarity and joy. It has an incredible ratio of 29:1 - theobromine:caffeine - perfect for the uplifting, heart opening effects without the negative caffeine over-stimulation. It also contains moderate levels of tryptamine and phenylethylamine (PEA) for feelings of satisfaction and awakening. It has a strong profile of sweet and fruity flavours absorbed from the Amazonian agroforestry in which it grows. Take 20-30g daily as a general tonic for mental health, immunity, energy and balance. We recommend this cacao for use in ceremonies involving movement or breathwork and for daily use to assist with mental health, energy, immunity and balance. Choose from either traditional ceremonial paste blocks or easy to use ceremonial paste droplets. UTURUNKU CACAO - KAY PACHA - THE JAGUAR In Chavin cosmovision, the Uturunku (Quecha meaning Jaguar) represents a protector, a guardian, and a being that creates harmony and balance in the Amazon. The Uturunku is also the protector of the cacao tree and is often depicted sitting on the cacao branches in ancient drawings. The Uturunku is a magical animal, a guide to the cosmic world, a symbol of wisdom for our actions that can connect the sun and the moon, day and night. The Uturunku represents the ‘Kay Pacha’, (the world of the living) and reminds us that we are not separate from the natural world, we are all interconnected in unity. It can also access the Hanan Pacha (world above – spiritual world) and Uku Pacha (inner world – ancestral world) through the master plant cacao. We honor the Chavin culture and the Uturunku with this special ceremonial cacao paste, specifically created to bring you into the Kay Pacha - here and now and to give you access to both the Hannan Pacha and Ukhu Pacha. It is carefully hand selected from a unique indigenous form of cacao grown specially for us in an artisinal agro-forestry farm deep in the Amazon jungle of Tarapoto, Peru. Each high vibrational block comes blessed direct from the farm and directly supports the farmers and community who produce it. UTURUNKU CACAO PROFILE The research of this unique and incredibly rare cacao is supported by Callaghan Innovation - New Zealand's premium government research agency. It has some very special therapeutic properties given its potent levels of bioactive components. Scientific studies have shown it to be ultra high in levels of biogenic amines like tryptamine, phenylethylamine (PEA) and the 5HTP precursor tryptophan - providing intense sensations of embodiment, satisfaction, spiritual awakening, reward, joy and happiness. The powerful effects of these molecules are also associated with 5HT-2a activation. It has lower levels of stimulating alkaloids like caffeine and theobromine so it won't keep you awake at night or give you the jitters, it is a calming and harmonizing internal cacao. It has a strong profile of earthy, sweet and nutty flavors absorbed from the Amazonian agroforestry in which it grows. You can literally taste the flavor of the jungle in this block! We recommend this cacao for use in ceremonies involving embodiment, trauma release, meditation, connection, awakening and for daily use to assist with feeling present, improving mental health, providing mental connection and mind-body-spirit balance. TRADITIONAL CACAO MOLINILLO The molinillo is a traditional ceremonial cacao whisk. It helps to make your ceremonial cacao wonderfully frothy. Made with sustainable Alder tree wood and naturally darkened and decorated by the frictional rubbing of pine wood. This artisanal wooden molinillo stirrer is made with love and care by our Mexican family friends following five generations of practice and knowledge. Heat resistant, dishwasher safe, non-toxic, 100% natural. Not painted. CACAO CEREMONIES Cacao ceremonies are a sacred Peruvian spiritual practice, often done under the guidance of a shaman. Generally (there are many types) a group of people will sit in a sacred circle while prayers or meditations are done and intentions are set. Often this is done with complete strangers and offers a safe place for people to talk about their fears, hopes, sufferings, or things they want to let go of. Then they will often talk about the good things they want to happen and come into their lives. There is no judgment or condemnation in the Cacao Ceremony, only support, and love. The ceremonial cacao helps to enhance the effects of the ceremony and provides a calming and uplifting feeling while bringing a deeper connection to the people in the circle and the land. Many of these ceremonies often end in dance, to uplift the body and open the heart. A COMPLETE GUIDE TO CEREMONIAL CACAO Click the picture below to download the complete guide to cacao ceremonies. Ceremonial Cacao Drink Recipe Ingredients: 2 ounces ceremonial cacao paste per person 7 ounces of water per person Unrefined sugar such as maple, syrup, coconut sugar or Rapadura Directions: Chop the cacao paste into small pieces so it will melt in the water. In a saucepan heat water till just before boiling. Add in the chopped cacao paste. Add sweetener to taste. Use a molinillo or whisk to stir until the cacao is blended and it has a nice froth on top. Pour into cups. It is good to have a spoon or stirring stick while drinking to keep consistency because the cacao will settle over time. - Algomed Chlorella - Glass Tube Grown | Rooted Nutrition
Algomed Chlorella - Glass Tube Grown The finest ethically produced, farm-to-table, whole-food chlorella supplement. Grown in Germany using sunlight and water. Algomed Chlorella Algomed Chlorella - Glass Tube Grown Contaminant Free Chlorella From the first algae to the finished product, Algomed maintains complete control of production. The chlorella is also certified to international standards GMP, HACCP, ISO 9001, ISO 22000, ISO 50001 and HALAL. GLASS TUBE GROWN CHLORELLA Nutrients and an algae starter culture are added to tubular aquariums full of mineral-rich well water and the algae begin to grow. The advantages of this 500-kilometre system of glass tubing are obvious. The algae get an optimal supply of sunlight because there are no “dark zones” like you get in the lower layers of a pond, and no contaminants from the outside can get into the culture. BROKEN CELL WALL CHLORELLA The cell walls of this chlorella are not broken up and indeed don’t have to be- Various investigations into this have shown: The digestibility of chlorella is not significantly increased by breaking up its cell walls. Factors such as the drying process or the species (strain) of chlorella used, have a greater impact. This is summarized as follows in a publication by T. Kanno (2005), stating that “The original characteristics and the physiological effects of Chlorella are not changed by breaking up the cell wall” and “It is more to be feared that the process of breaking up the cell wall may degrade proteins, destroy vitamins, and fatty acids, thereby resulting in oxidation effects.” CHLORELLA RESEARCH AND QUALITY CONTROL Algomed does intensive research into continuous process optimization and new possibilities. They have been able to reduce the electricity consumption per kilogram of algae produced over the last five years (2012-2017) by a third, as well as nearly halving the water consumption! And in the meantime, they are cultivating a healthy dozen different microalgae for a broad spectrum of applications. POND GROWN CHLORELLA Most chlorella is grown in outdoor ponds, which is a huge problem. Chlorella bioaccumulates contaminants from the environment, such as from rain and air pollution. Most chlorella is grown in India and China where there are huge problems with air and water pollution. These pollutants end up in the chlorella. Most companies don't test for all of these pollutants, so there chlorella shows as not having contaminants, but that's because they don't test for most of them. B12 IN CHLORELLA The topic of the bioavailability of vitamin B12 from algae is a point of controversy. And in fact, there are indeed major differences between algae with regard to the presence of various cobalamins and their bioavailability. Using the LC-MS/MS method lets them detect only the bioavailable forms in it. Algomed Chlorella contains 100 mcg of bioavailable vitamin B12 per 100 grams of chlorella. Chlorella b12 is bioavailable for humans, but the b12 analogs in other algae, like spirulina, are not. The recommended daily dose of 3 grams of Algomed Chlorella represents 120% of the daily value. LEARN MORE ABOUT CHLORELLA Where and how your chlorella is grown is extremely important. From contamination and ethical issues, there are a lot of important factors to consider when choosing a chlorella supplement. Check out our blog for a more in depth look at chlorella. - Foods That Might Be Causing Gut Problems | Rooted Nutrition
Certain foods, such as vegetable and seed oils and certain sweeteners, can cause major problems for your gut. Learn which foods to avoid to help your gut thrive GUT HEALTH CENTER Problematic foods FOODS THAT CAN BE HARD ON THE GUT Find The Foods That Are Causing Problems In Your Gut Just as the right foods can fertilize your gut garden, the wrong foods can make your garden wilt. FOODS THAT CAN CAUSE GUT HEALTH PROBLEMS The gut garden needs proper nourishment in order to flourish. The wrong foods starve our garden and cause a cascade of problems. PERFECTION CAN BE A PROBLEM FOR GUT HEALTH There is no way to achieve the perfect diet, nor should it be the goal. Trying to be perfect only leads to stress and mental health issues. The focus should be on eating a healthy whole foods diet. The key is balance. Having a treat is not going to make or break your health. However, you can't eat a box of cookies or a whole cake everyday and expect to be healthy. So on your birthday have that piece of cake, eat that dessert when celebrating your anniversary, enjoy a cookie. The stress of trying to be perfect can negatively affect your gut health. FATS AND GUT HEALTH The fats you choose have a huge impact on your gut health. The wrong fats will leave your gut garden irritated and inflamed. VEGETABLE AND SEED OILS AND GUT HEALTH Vegetable oils have contributed more to the decline of human health than nearly any other food. This may seem like a strong statement, but it's true. Fat was replaced with sugar because of marketing by the sugar industry, not because of good science. Animal fats and coconut oil were replaced by trans fat. When trans-fats were found to be horrible they switched to "non-hydrogenated" vegetable oils. These oils contribute massive amounts of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fattya acids should be 2 or 3 to 1. Instead the average American has a ratio of 50 or higher to 1. These has lead to a huge amount of unnecessary deaths, illness, and suffering, all in the name of profit. In fact, nearly all of what is taught as "good" nutrition is only considered so because of massive amounts of food industry lobbying. VEGETABLE AND SEED OILS CAUSE GUT HEALTH PROBLEMS Replacing these inflammatory oils is the best thing you can do not just for your gut health, but for your overall health. The oils you want to avoid are: Canola (also known as rapeseed) Soybean Safflower Grapeseed Sunflower Corn Cottonseed Fake butter spreads (Yes, even the ones from the health food store.) While palm oil is not inflammatory like these vegetable oils, it is best to avoid it due its horrific affects on the environment. WHAT FATS ARE BETTER FOR GUT HEALTH? There are some wonderful fats that can be used instead: Grass-fed Butter Grass-fed Ghee Animal fats from pastured and grass-fed animals such as tallow. Good olive oil (Unfortunately most olive oils are adulterated with nut and seed oils.) Ethically sourced coconut oil SWEETENERS AND GUT HEALTH Sugar is added to almost everything. We eat too much sugar, this is not news to anyone. While cutting back on sugar is always a good thing, there are certain sweeteners that are worse for your gut than others. FRUCTOSE AND GUT HEALTH Heavily refined fructose based sweeteners are not great for your gut. They can dysfunction of the tight junctions in your gut. These types of sweeteners include: Agave Fructose High-Fructose Corn Syrup Fruit Juice Concentrate ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS AND GUT HEALTH These types of sweeteners can negatively affect your gut bacteria. These types of sweeteners include: Aspartame Saccharin Acesulfame Neotame Sucralose It is best to avoid these sweeteners in all cases. SUGAR ALCOHOLS AND GUT HEALTH Sugar alcohols are sweet tasting, but have a different structure than sugar, which makes them difficult to absorb. These sweeteners include: Xylitol Erythritol Sorbitol Isomalt Maltitol Lactitol These sweeteners are definitely not a good choice for gut health. They can cause large amounts of gastrointestinal side effects such as gas, bloating, and loose stools. ALTERNATIVE SWEETENERS AND GUT HEALTH These sweeteners do not have sugar, but taste very sweet. These sweeteners include: Stevia Monk Fruit Refined stevia (the white powder) can have a negative effect on gut bacteria, so we do not recommend using it if you have gut health issues. The effects, of unrefined, or green stevia, have not been studied enough to know its affect on gut bacteria. Monk fruit has not had adequate study to know its affect on gut health. However, we recommend against using it because of ethical issues involved in it's harvesting and processing, as well as not knowing its affect on gut bacteria. WHAT SWEETENERS ARE BEST FOR GUT HEALTH? We all consume way too much sugar and sweeteners. The best thing to do is to gradually work to reduce your consumption of sweeteners of all kinds. Now there will always be times when you may need to use some sweeteners. Our recommendations are unrefined, ethically sourced, coconut sugar and good quality maple syrup . Make sure to buy your maple syrup in glass bottles, not plastic jugs. These sweeteners are very low in fructose and will have less of an impact on gut health than other sweeteners. ALCOHOL AND GUT HEALTH Drinking too much alcohol can have a very negative effect on your gut health. Excessive alcohol intake can increase dysbiosis in the gut. Dysbiosis is an imbalance in your gut bacteria. Does this mean that you can never have a drink? Of course not. It does mean that having four or five cocktails a night is probably not a good idea. RED WINE AND GUT HEALTH A glass of red wine is alcohol choice with the least downside. However, with gut health issues it is simply better to avoid all alochol. If you are going to drink wine, make sure the grapes are grown organically. Shoutout to our friends at Bonterra Vineyards , who not only produce incredible red wines, but are doing so using regenerative agriculture. JUICE AND GUT HEALTH Despite marketing from food companies, juice is not a health food. These juices contain massive amounts of fructose, the worst sweetener for your gut, and remove the beneficial fiber and other gut supportive compounds. One glass of orange juice contains the same amount of sugar as two tablespoons of cake frosting! It is a much better choice to have a smoothie with some berries and unsweetened, grass-fed kefir . PROCESSED MEATS AND GUT HEALTH Processed and cured meats such as deli meats, hot dogs, and bacon are definitely not good for your gut heath. Instead of buying sliced meats at the deli counter for your sandwich, cook some chicken or roast beef at home and slice it up for sandwich. Your gut will thank you. Does this mean you can never have bacon again? Of course not! It just shouldn't be an everyday occurance. For those times when you do want to treat yourself to some bacon, make sure it is from humanly raised animals, and without sugar added, like the most delicious bacon from our friends at North Country Smokehouse. ULTRA PROCESSED FOODS AND GUT HEALTH A good rule of thumb to follow, is that the more refined and processed a food, the less likely it is to be healthy for your gut and for you. You don't need us to tell you that whole grains are better than white bread, or that a carrot is healthier than a donut. You got this! Eating a large variety of real, unrefined, whole foods is the best way to support your gut. THE HAPPY GUT EQUATION Getting the happy gut equation right will help you to live a happier, healthier life. IGY's + prebiotics + probiotics + healthy diet + stress relief = A happy gut! Great prebiotic foods include citrus fruits, garlic, onions, root vegetables, and raw cacao, Great probiotic foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi. Eating a wide variety of whole foods is a key part of the happy gut equation. Choosing whole foods is the best thing you can do to support a healthy gut and a healthier you. Heavily processed foods exist to make corporations money, not to make you healthy, no matter what the marketing says. - Seleno Health Maca - Farm-To-Table Maca | Rooted Nutrition
Learn about the people behind our ethically produced, farm-to-table activated maca powders and nibs, maca MCB oil, maca concentrates, and Men's and Women's Maca SELENO HEALTH MACA SELENO HEALTH MACA The most amazing maca Ethics, quality, and efficacy combine to make this powerful plant into something incredible. WHY SELENO HEALTH Seleno Health maca is a true farm-to-bottle product. They and their volunteers help harvest and plant maca in Peru with their farmer and family. They empower their farmer to create a complete product, not just a powdered commodity. They then buy each bag directly from the farmer and profit share together in partnership. The farmer receives almost 20x more per kg than selling in bulk to a broker. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT In addition to giving the farmers a better price for their Maca, an additional dollar from each bag is donated to the community. They run community and developmental programs funded by their profits, fund-raising initiatives, and donations. They give back to the community through social responsibility and create a better quality of life for all. They run retreats in Peru that bring eco-tourists to the farm to assist their farmers, local community, and schools. This experience shares the incredible culture and history of maca and gives people the opportunity to connect with their food and the community that produces it. You can actually go to Peru with them and volunteer with the harvest, it is an incredible opportunity. Check out the videos below to learn about how they give back to the community and improves the lives of the people there. SCIENCE COMBINED WITH ANCIENT TRADITIONS Properly done scientific research is incredibly important to validate and show what natural remedies are capable of. Claims should not be made without scientific support and clinical trials to back them up. At the same time, all too often science dismisses the knowledge passed down over thousands of years because it does not fit a certain model or it does not fit in a certain box. On the other hand, many people dismiss scientific research if the conclusions do not fit their view or contradict something they believe. The truth is that we need both science and traditional wisdom. The Maca Experts is run by two people, Dr. Corin Storkey who holds a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Melbourne, and Jacqueline Huapaya, an engineer, and an expert on the traditional knowledge of Maca. This is an ideal combination of expertise and a model for other companies to follow. The Maca Experts partner with the University of Victoria while conducting studies and research on the many benefits of Maca. Check out the video below to learn about how they are combining ancient wisdom with modern science. QUALITY CONTROL As with every supplement, proper quality control is essential to producing a great product. The first step in making a great Maca product is getting great raw material. The Maca Experts have their own farms and control the process from seed to powder, they do not have to worry about many of the issues that affect companies who buy bulk powder from brokers. This does not mean that they do not need to do any testing on the product though. Even though they have full control over the raw material they still test for many things such as heavy metals like lead and other contaminants. In addition, they test to ensure adequate levels of the many beneficial compounds such as macamides. Check out the video below to learn more about maca quality control. A BRIGHT FUTURE We are so excited to be bringing this incredible Maca to the United States. The Maca Experts represent the ideals that all companies should strive for. We are proud to support them in their mission to produce products that enrich the lives of the people, improve the environment, and make life better for so many. We will continue to search the globe for more products that support our mission of making the world a better place and improving the lives of the people who live here. - Seleno Health Maca, Cacao, And Macambo | Rooted Nutrition
Seleno Health is the premier supplier of ethically produced, farm-to-table superfood products: Maca, Cacao, Macambo, and more. They set the standard for quality Brands We Love SELENO HEALTH MACA AND CACAO Ethically Sourced, Farm-to-bottle Maca and Cacao Sacred gifts from the Earth Mother FARM-TO-BOTTLE Seleno Health believes it is up to us as consumers, suppliers and retailers to protect the incredible heritage, culture and history behind maca in Peru and to create an ethical and sustainable way to produce it that benefits all involved. They have a direct partnership with the farm, farmer and community and are committed to offer protection from exploitation. They allow full production of the final product to be carried out by the farmer in Peru, so in essence they are selling his product on his behalf and sharing back profits with him. It’s about producing farm-to-bottle products and that benefit and uplift the communities that produce them. PROPERLY PREPARED As a starchy root vegetable Maca always needs to be cooked before consumption and should not be eaten raw. Eating raw maca can actually be detrimental to your health. When it comes to raw Maca vs gelatinized Maca (also known as activated), it is best to choose the heat treated option as it is gut safe and contains equivalent or higher levels of bioactive macamides . The process also helps to remove compounds that can negatively affect the thyroid and molds. Seleno Health only uses heat 'activated' maca (gelatinized maca) which is pre-cooked safe to consume in your smoothies, plus it tastes much better. ANCIENT TRADITIONS Maca is the most sacred plant of Junin for the indigenous people who cultivate it. Cultivation of maca is as much spiritual as it is physical for the locals. All of the maca Seleno Health produces is prepared with respect for Pachamama and in-line with all of her sacred ancient traditions. They follow the practice of Pagapu – payment to Mother Earth in order to fill the nurturing soil with love and intention. In return Pachamama provides healing medicine for us all to consume. The spiritual practices surrounding the planting and harvesting of maca are as important as the techniques used as the spirit of maca is what nourishes our bodies. We believe if we are lucky enough to have access to these ancient plants then we should all treat them with the respect they deserve. Not all Maca is equal and not all companies comply with these sacred requirements. RESCUING ANCIENT TRADITIONS OF CACAO AND FARMING PRACTICES The cacao is produced farm to bottle as well. It is cultivated surrounded by native jungle the way it has been done for thousands of years. Hand-picked, blessed in ceremony with reverence and supported with ancestral knowledge, education, and ancient tools for you to better connect. RESCUING FARMERS AND FAMILIES FROM THE DRUG TRADE After years of violence from terrorists and drug traffickers in the cacao growing region of Peru due to the cocaine industry, these farmers now have an opportunity to grow artisanal cacao instead of being lured into the drug trade because of a lack of other opportunities. Seleno Health's cacao farmer also gets substantially higher profits by being able to sell their cacao directly without brokers or intermediaries taking a cut. RESCUING THE AMAZON AND ENVIRONMENT FROM DEFORESTATION The cacao is agroforestry ’shade-grown’ under the shadow of many native fruits, with an organic canopy protecting crops like banana and papaya. Cacao naturally loves to grow under a forest canopy, so there is less stress on the tree, it promotes biodiversity, improves soil fertility and sequesters 30% more carbon than non-shade grown cacao. It also helps to protect the Amazon rainforest from deforestation. - Nature2U Kakadu Plum Whole Food Vitamin C | Rooted Nutrition
Nature2U Kakadu Plum whole-food vitamin C supplements are harvested from the pristine Northern Territory of Australia. It is a very rich source of bioflavonoids NATURE2U KAKADU PLUM VITAMIN C NATURE2U KAKADU PLUM WHOLE FOOD VITAMIN C Australian Kakadu Plum Whole food vitamin C supplements Australian Kakadu Plum Vitamin C The Kakadu Plum is an amazing little fruit. It's packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. It has been a traditional food of the aboriginal people for thousands of years. Kakadu plums grow wild in three regions of Australia. However, the plums from the Northern Territory have much higher levels of beneficial compounds. We wanted to find a supplier that sourced their plums from this region and that we could trace back to the source as part of our Farm-To-Bottle Project . Nature2U Kakadu Plum whole food vitamin C supplements represent the purest expression of vitamin C and set a standard for others to follow. Ethical And Sustainable Whole Food Vitamin C Nature2U Australian kakadu plums are wild harvested under strict permitting and supervision in the Northern Territory of Australia. This is to ensure that this important Aboriginal food is protected for generations to come. It was very important for us to find a supplier who took care to ensure the plums were sustainably harvested and that the people doing the harvesting were paid a fair wage. Kakadu Vitamin C The flesh of the fruit contains much higher levels of nutrients and beneficial compounds than the seeds and skin, so we wanted a product made just from the flesh, even though products made from the peel and seeds are much more profitable. Nature2U only uses the flesh of the plum. Kadaku Plum Drying Proper drying of the Kakadu plum is important to preserving the nutritional value. Spray-drying and high-heat drying are cheaper to use, but they often result in nutrient loss and can damage the fragile beneficial compounds. Nature2U uses a gentle drying process called refractance window drying. This is a very sophisticated drying method that helps to preserve nearly all of the nutrient value and protects fragile compounds. Non-Adulterated Kakadu Vitamin C Nature2U does not add synthetic ascorbic acid like so many companies due to spike the vitamin C content of their products. Only the naturally occurring vitamin C is present. Because they are the producers, they do not buy from middlemen, where most adulteration occurs. We also wanted a product that was free of fillers, binders, sweeteners, and flavorings, which are all too common in vitamin C supplements. Nature2U is free of additives. NATURE2U Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Whole food vitamin C supplements contain the synergy that can only come from whole foods. Synthetic ascorbic acid mixed with a pinch of rose hips or bioflavonoids cannot replace the intricate balance that occurs in nature. Check out our article, All About Vitamin C , to learn more. Nature2U checks all of the boxes for what we look for in a great vitamin C supplement: Good drying methods Made from just the flesh, not the seeds and skin. Unfortunately, the vast majority of collagen peptide products come from South America and come with a whole host of ethical issues. Check out our blog , Collagen: An Ethical Nightmare , to learn more about this. WILD CAUGHT MARINE COLLAGEN PEPTIDES Collagen Straight Up Marine Collagen Peptides are exclusively derived from the skin and bones of sustainably sourced, wild-caught fish from the Australian Pacific. Unfortunately, most marine collagen comes from fisheries and fish that are being overfished and where fish populations are in danger of collapse. These peptides come from a well managed fishery, where fish populations are well managed and protected to avoid overfishing. It contains type one collagen and is great for skin health. Marine collagen is of particular interest due to its very low molecular weight, which makes it quickly and easily absorbed and highly bioavailable. It mixes easily into any food or beverage (hot or cold) and has little to no taste, unlike many marine collagen products which taste fishy. Choosing the right collagen will help to ensure you get the best results possible. - Herbs For Gut Health And Nourishment | Rooted Nutrition
Properly made digestive bitters, raw aloe vera juice, slippery elm, DGL licorice, and other herbal supplements will help keep your gut healthy and happy. GUT HEALTH CENTER HERBAL GUT SUPPORT HERBS FOR GUT HEALTH Your guts little helpers. There are many herbs that can help to support your journey on the way to good gut health. HERBAL SUPPORT These herbal helpers can help to soothe, calm, nourish, and support your gut health in so many ways. TASTE AND SMELL Many people are not aware, but pills are actually one of the worst ways to use herbs. Herbs have many properties and effects that can only be had when they are tasted or smelled. So if you just swallow a pill you will miss out on so much. In addition, many companies hide inferior, or old herbs inside of a pill because they know it will never be noticed that way. Tinctures, elixers, teas, and infusions are the best way to take herbs for the most beneficial effect. These also are much easier on the digestive tract and start to work faster than pills. ALOE Aloe is probably the most well known digestive herb. It has so many incredible uses. Aloe acts as a digestive bitter, while also hydrating, soothing and calming the digestive tract. There is a lot you need to know when choose an aloe vera. From color, thickness, adulteration, preservatives and more, there a lot of factors that can help you determine a proper aloe vera product. THE RIGHT SPECIES There are many species of aloe vera. Some such as cape aloe are simply laxatives and do not have the nourishing benefits of traditional aloe. The species of aloe of you want to use is called Aloe Barbadensis. INNER LEAF When using aloe vera it is important to only use the inner portion. The outer portion contains compounds that can cause a lot of intestinal issues including a harsh, stimulant laxative called aloin. Make sure your aloe is free of this. THE RIGHT FORM Aloe should be taken in liquid form. Pills, powders, and concentrates are put through harsh processes which can damage many of the fragile compounds. In addition a lot of the benefits of aloe vera start in the mouth, so taking a pill will cause you to miss out on many of the benefits. CONSISTENCY If you have ever opened an aloe vera leaf, you know that the inside is thick and jelly like. Good aloe juice is cold pressed, not filtered from the inner filet, so it will be a bit thinner than the inside of an aloe leaf. Unfortunately, some companies will first filter the aloe and then add thickeners such as carrageenan to them to give the appearance of being jelly like. Adding thickeners is a cheap, dirty trick. Many of the beneficial compounds in aloe, such as the incredibly important and hydrating pectin, are lost when aloe is filtered. So avoid products that are filtered as many of the benefits will have been removed through filtering and other processing techiniques. COLOR Your liquid aloe should be about the same color as the gel inside of a fresh leaf. If your aloe is brown, it means it has oxidized. Brown aloe indicates that proper care was not taken during the manufacturing process. Aloe must be processed inside of a vacuum, in order to prevent it from oxidizing. Aloe that looks and tastes like water, has had nearly all of its beneficial compounds removed through distillation. All that remains is a bit of sulfur. Aloe should not taste and look like spring water! PRESERVATIVES Many aloe vera products contain preservatives such as potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. This are not necessary when a product is manufactured properly. If you see these ingredients then you know that manufacturing was done with an eye on cost savings, not quality. All aloe vera liquids need, when processed properly, is a bit of citric acid or lemon juice, to stabilize the ph. FLAVORINGS AND SWEETENERS One of the most beneficial effects that aloe vera has is as a bitter. Flavorings, juices, and sweeteners mask the taste and will reduce the benefits you receive from it. Most people have only tasted aloe vera products that were improperly tasted, or contained large amounts of the bitter outer leaf. Aloe vera actually has a much better taste than that. You want the aloe to taste like aloe! MALTODEXTRIN ADULTERATION Many aloe vera products are adulterated with maltodextrin. You won't see it on the label or know it has been added. This is done by manufacturers in order to cheat certain tests. We will be making a video shortly to show you how you can see if your aloe has been adulterated with maltodextrin. POLYSACCHARIDES Polysaccharide testing is often done to show how "active" or beneficial an aloe is. This compounds are just one of many important constituents in aloe. Focusing on how much of a particular compound is in the aloe is the wrong way to look at it. Plants are not isolated compounds. How the various constituents interact with each other is a huge part of their benefit. In addition, many aloe vera products contain added polysaccharides or other adulterents to cheat the testing, so even if they were the most important compounds, the testing is not reliable. - Apogee Spirulina - Greenhouse Grown | Rooted Nutrition
Apogee Spirulina - An ethically produced, farm-to-table, whole-food spirulina supplement. Greenhouse-grown, artisanal-style spirulina directly from the farm. APOGEE SPIRULINA APOGEE SPIRULINA SPRINKLES Artisan Spirulina From New Mexico The Farm is located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The magnificent sunshine which averages 300 days a year offsets the energy use with solar power. The utilization of the French method in this excellent climate results in an unparalleled spirulina. ARTISAN SPIRULINA PRODUCTION The French artisan method of spirulina cultivation differs in several key ways from large scale commercial farms. The spirulina is grown in a greenhouse which reduces water evaporation. This is critical in a high desert climate. The greenhouse also allows the spirulina to remain at a constant high temperature during cold desert nights. This provides for an optimum growth rate during the summer months. The small greenhouse environment is free of dust and other contaminants, so the use of pesticides or herbicides is not necessary. SPIRULINA HARVESTING AND PROCESSING Harvesting is done almost daily and slow dried in a solar oven to maintain the highest nutritional levels, so a higher quality finished product is achieved. During the peak of the season, harvesting is done five days a week and the ponds are rested and rejuvenated over the weekend. The growing season is between April and October. Peak harvesting occurs in the hot summer months. After harvest, the spirulina is gently dried in their solar oven. Once it’s harvested, Apogee spirulina is then pressed into “spaghettis”—coiled strings of spirulina that gives the algae a larger surface area. This larger surface area means that the spirulina has a minimal nutritional loss, making for a higher quality product. This method of producing spirulina produces a more nutrient-dense material, with higher levels of carotenoids and the beneficial fatty acid GLA. HOW TO USE APOGEE SPIRULINA SPRINKLES Add it to your smoothie, sprinkle on a salad or eat directly from the bag. The only limit to Apogee Spirulina is your imagination. Suggested use: 1 teaspoon per day or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. It is best to start slowly and gradually increase to the full dosage. Refrigerate after opening. It can be mixed into any food or beverage of your choice. Best taken earlier in the day because it can give you energy. The dried spirulina will never overpower your smoothie, compared to powder ones from large spirulina farms. Apogee Spirulina is cultivated with passion and is never harvested before its time. CLEAN AND PURE SPIRULINA Most spirulina is grown in outdoor ponds and is often contaminated with pollutants from the local environment and the rain. Apogee Spirulina is grown in a covered greenhouse, fed by mountain spring water. It is free of microcystin and ultra-low in heavy metals. WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT SPIRULINA?
