The magnificent sunshine which averages 300 days a year offsets the energy use with solar power. The utilization of the French method in this excellent climate results in an unparalleled spirulina. ARTISAN SPIRULINA PRODUCTION The French artisan method of spirulina cultivation differs in several key ways from large scale commercial farms. The spirulina is grown in a greenhouse which reduces water evaporation. This is critical in a high desert climate. The greenhouse also allows the spirulina to remain at a constant high temperature during cold desert nights. This provides for an optimum growth rate during the summer months. The small greenhouse environment is free of dust and other contaminants, so the use of pesticides or herbicides is not necessary. SPIRULINA HARVESTING AND PROCESSING Harvesting is done almost daily and slow dried in a solar oven to maintain the highest nutritional levels, so a higher quality finished product is achieved. During the peak of the season, harvesting is done five days a week and the ponds are rested and rejuvenated over the weekend. The growing season is between April and October. Peak harvesting occurs in the hot summer months. After harvest, the spirulina is gently dried in their solar oven. Once it’s harvested, Apogee spirulina is then pressed into “spaghettis”—coiled strings of spirulina that gives the algae a larger surface area. This larger surface area means that the spirulina has a minimal nutritional loss, making for a higher quality product. This method of producing spirulina produces a more nutrient-dense material, with higher levels of carotenoids and the beneficial fatty acid GLA. HOW TO USE APOGEE SPIRULINA SPRINKLES Add it to your smoothie, sprinkle on a salad or eat directly from the bag. The only limit to Apogee Spirulina is your imagination. Suggested use: 1 teaspoon per day or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. It is best to start slowly and gradually increase to the full dosage. Refrigerate after opening. It can be mixed into any food or beverage of your choice. Best taken earlier in the day because it can give you energy. The Red Triad mafia came to Peru and started stealing maca crops. They exported these crops to China, where it is being illegally grown. CHINESE MACA Chinese maca is grown at lower altitudes and is farmed with heavy amounts of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides because the conditions are not suitable for sustainable maca farming. It also contains much higher levels of heavy metals. Due to improper drying and growing conditions, it does not form adequate levels of beneficial bioactive constituents. DRIVING UP THE PRICE The distortion caused by the Chinese mafia caused the price of this staple food to dramatically increase for the people living there. It's important that farmers are paid a fair price for their crops so that they can live a life of dignity, farmland can be protected, and farmers can stay on their land. ETHICAL SOURCING So how can you ensure that your maca is ethically produced? There are several things you can do. Buy maca from companies that get their maca directly from the farm. This eliminates the middleman, where most of the problems are created, and usually means the farmer was paid a much higher price for their crops. Even better, buy maca from companies that are a farm partnership, and form a vertically integrated partnership. This means that the farmer and the company work hand and hand. The company only uses maca from their farm partner. This ensures fair pay for the farmer and that the company gets the best quality maca because every facet of the growing and production is done in-house and is 100% traceable and verified. TRACEABILITY Our maca comes directly from a single family farm in Peru. It is a vertically integrated partnership between the farmer and the finished product company. It does not get more traceable and transparent. The farmers are paid significantly higher amounts for their maca than they would get on the open market.
